Jordyn's Senior Portraits

I'm going to let you in on a little secret:  I was not always the adorable little scamp that you know and love today.  No, no, I was once a moody and brooding teenager.  And I was fairly convinced that all of my peers were similarly moody and brooding, at least on the inside.

But Jordyn?  This girl is not sitting up at night wondering why her parents just don't get her.  No, the first thing I noticed about Jordyn is that there is nothing moody-and-brooding about her!  (Okay, that was the second thing I noticed -- the first thing I noticed was that she's gorgeous!)  She was happy, and she remained happy despite the fact that it was 5000 degrees outside.  Love this girl.

Be forewarned, mothers, if you're at the photoshoot, I'm going to harass you into getting into a picture.  I know you like to stay behind the camera, but trust me, you're going to want to see this; someday, it will make you smile.  Like the photos of these two.  I could not stop smiling while editing (and that was partially because I know what mom said that elicited Jordyn's reaction in the second photo).  :)

This part of the shoot was at George Washington's Grist Mill in Alexandria, Virginia.  The historic site provided a beautiful backdrop, don't you think? (Great idea, ladies!)

We then changed venues to take photos at Jordyn's high school softball field.  With much effort, she was able to show me her game face (she'd been practicing, she told me, in between shots).

 

It didn't last long.  

Jordyn kept smiling until we lost the sun.  In fact, this one here -- this is the one that I'll think of when I picture Jordyn.

Cake! Cake! Cake!

I know it's been awhile.  I'll be honest: I didn't know how to follow that last post.  But when I took S and C's cake-smash and clean-up photos, I just knew that these had to be next.

We had SUCH a good (and messy and wet) time!  S and C were so sweet and funny and cooperative that we ended up with a ton of awesome pictures.  I had the hardest time narrowing them down, but here are just a few of my favorites.

Without further ado, let me introduce to you the cutest twins you've ever seen:  S and C!!

A weekend at camp

I spent this Memorial Day weekend as a photographer for a camp held in a hotel in Arlington, Virginia.  Five hundred children and their families attended.  Add in the five hundred amazing military mentors paired with each of the children, add in the volunteers and staff, and there were over 2200 people participating in this camp. 

There were so many smiling faces

and lots of malarky.

In fact, sometimes, when I could clear my mind and just watch and listen, I could almost forget that all of these kids...

these seemingly happy, silly kids...

had lost a military servicemember parent or sibling.

Every

single

one of the kids.

On Sunday morning, the kids wrote letters to their lost parents, and attached them to balloons

and then released them.  Each balloon represents a fallen servicemember.  There were so many balloons.  Too many.

General Dempsey, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff came to visit.

And we spent Memorial Day at Arlington National Cemetery

This is the price of freedom.  

The heroes I photographed this weekend were remembering the love, celebrating life, and sharing the journey.  The organization that made it possible is called TAPS.  If you can donate your time or talent or funds to them, please do.  They make it possible for these survivors to be among a new family -- an unwillingly huge family who understands them in a way that we simply can't, and in a way I hope that we will never have to.
